About

Naomi Xila-Xulis is media artist and performer specialising in sound installation. Her work explores the relationship between human, machine, and space—examining our relationship with digital technology alongside research into travel and ecology.

The instruments she builds listen: circuits, microcontrollers, sensors, transducers, and hydrophones measure presence and translate it into sound in real time. Whoever enters the room is not an audience, but an input signal. At the core of her practice lies liminality — the moment a sound belongs to no single source.

Field recordings in Patagonia brought her to sound. Much of her practice is collaborative, most notably with Efluxemble, the sound-performance ensemble she founded and leads. Projects have taken her across Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Italy, and France.

As a Meisterschülerin of Danica Dakić at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, lately she received the postgraduate Anschlussperspektiven grant for her graduation project AULA UNTER STROM (2026).

Selected Works

RADAR (2025)
Performance & Interactive Installation
Exhibited/Performed at: Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; Art Artist, Düsseldorf; Petersburg Art Space, Berlin

A custom 24 GHz microwave radar system distinguishes animated from non-animated matter. Detecting human presence triggers a 195 Hz sine tone, transformed into a levitating acoustic effect via delay and reverb. The technoid costume features a horn, an LED display, and an AI-generated ox tail, examining semantic-free communication between human and machine.

RADAR II Ventilator (2025)
Autonomous Sound Sculpture
Exhibited at: LTK4, Cologne

Translates two RADAR sensors into an autonomous sound sculpture, receiving physical impulses and responding through distinct sonic outputs.

ESCARABAJO (2026)
Kinetic Object & Sound Installation
Exhibited at: Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; Kunstmuseum Solingen

Centering on a rhinoceros beetle found dead during a DAAD residency in Santa Elena, Colombia (2023). Electronically modified and motorized, the insect moves endlessly backward in a circle inside a ceramic landscape—trapped in a loop.

CYBIRTH (2026)
Immersive Sound Performance
Exhibited at: Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf

Utilizes the body as a resonance chamber. A vaginally inserted hydrophone interacts with venue speakers to generate an immersive feedback loop, translating internal physical processes into spatial sound architecture.

AULA UNTER STROM (2026)
Spatial Sound Installation
Exhibited at: Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; Burapha University, Thailand (Video Documentation)

Works with spatial emptiness and sound. 34 tactile transducers are installed across the audience seating area. Eight Euclidean rhythms form the algorithmic foundation for real-time sound generation; preset parameters intermix dynamically while sensors feed raw sonic textures into the system. Audio programming in collaboration with Miguel Moreno (Mexico). Awarded the Post-Graduate Fellowship "Anschlussperspektiven."

いしかり速い — ISHIKARI-Express (2025)
Electroacoustic Soundscape
Exhibited at: Julia Stoschek Foundation, Düsseldorf

An imaginary voyage to Japan formulated as an electroacoustic collage, inspired by musique concrète.

ZELTEN IN DER VILLA MASSIMO (2023–2026)
Video Diary & Electroacoustic Soundscape
Exhibited at: Asphalt Festival, Düsseldorf (2023); Goethe-Institut Rome (2024); Brunhilde Moll Stiftung, Düsseldorf (2026)

Explores themes of travel, access, and belonging by appropriating a culturally significant institution in German art history.
